SafeSchool MAP℠: Nationwide School Safety Score Platform

SafeSchool MAP℠: Nationwide School Safety Score Platform

SafeSchool MAP℠ is America’s first national school safety scoring infrastructure, built to provide a verified, standardized safety score for every K–12 school in the United States. The platform covers more than 130,000 schools and serves over 50 million students, addressing a long-standing gap where parents and communities lack a consistent way to evaluate a school’s safety posture. Modeled after how FICO scores function in credit markets or bond ratings operate in debt markets, SafeSchool MAP℠ is designed to become the permanent reference standard for school safety nationwide.

How It Works

At its core, the platform runs on four interconnected, research-based systems developed by Protecting Our Students, Inc. (POSI), a nonprofit standards authority. The 4-Level Safety Standard℠ establishes a national baseline that defines what school safety looks like at each tier. The 94-Point Safety Zones℠ provide a granular assessment across physical, procedural, and cultural safety dimensions. The Dynamic Safety Score℠ functions as a living, real-time metric that updates as school conditions and data evolve. The final output is the SafeSchool Report℠, a verified document delivered to schools, districts, and other stakeholders.

Technology & Data Infrastructure

The technology behind SafeSchool MAP℠ combines a scalable data engine with AI-powered analytics. The engine aggregates public safety data alongside verified school assessments, while the AI component identifies risk trends and benchmarks performance across the full network of 130,000+ schools. Access is provided through two interfaces: a public dashboard that lets parents, students, and community members view safety scores by ZIP code, district, or state, and an administrator portal that provides schools and districts with detailed analytics and improvement-tracking tools.

Organizational Structure

SafeSchool MAP℠ operates through three layers to maintain both credibility and scale. POSI acts as the nonprofit standards authority responsible for research and the 4-Level Safety Standard℠. The SafeSchool Network (SSN) serves as the live operational platform that proves the framework works in practice with engaged schools. SafeSchool MAP℠ itself is the national infrastructure layer that delivers verified, searchable safety scores to the public.

Key Features

The platform’s key features include a National Safety Map that scores and geographically maps every K–12 school, real-time scoring that reflects current conditions, and AI-driven intelligence for cross-school benchmarking. It emphasizes public accountability through transparent scores available to parents, districts, and policymakers. The system also incorporates community input via ratings, reviews, and safety ambassador programs.

Current Status

SafeSchool MAP℠ is actively in development, with its foundational frameworks already operational through the SafeSchool Network. The initiative is positioned to respond to the increased focus on school safety accountability following Uvalde, while leveraging emerging AI capabilities to scale nationwide assessment.
